This drawing for tendering was quickly drawn by Rod in ink and pencil. It was accompanied by a detailed set of specifications and schedules of work.
The existing lath and plaster ceiling was retained, with the existing slates removed carefully for inspection by Rod and the builders.
The sound slates were then refixed on new battens with breathable felt with replacements added as necessary, after various decayed wooden rafters had been replaced or repaired . The leadwork around the tower also refixed and all the gutters were replaced in cast iron, painted on site and with putty joints.
The construction budget was less than £12,000, and we understand that the roof is still in good order - but of course 25 years is still quite young for a natural slate roof anyway.
